Faculty Life and Field Study

The time spent during the program in the Faculty's paddy fields is among the most important. Professors teach students how to grow good rice seedlings and how to plant them in paddy fields, as well as techniques for soil and water management.

Additionally, field work is also carried out dairy farms. Students learn advanced technologies for breeding livestock, producing high-quality milk and processed foods, and maintaining good pastures and environmental conditions.

The forestry class includes field studies on shiitake mushroom farms. Mushroom production is a major primary industry in Fukushima, with farmers using high-level techniques.

Students also partake in cooking activities. Recently, the study topic was Vietnamese cuisine, namely banh xeo (fried pancakes with vegetables and shrimp) and fresh spring rolls. Students use this time to exchange food cultures and habits.

A field study in Aizu (western Fukushima) focused on Aka-Kabocha (red squash), a traditional local variety. Students interviewed farmers about the value of their products and discussed ways to address local economic activity and depopulation issues.

Students learned about high-tech agriculture with the special cooperation of Kubota and Yanmar, two leading Japanese agricultural machine manufacturers. Both theoretical studies and field practice are important.
